8 to 61 in 10 Short Years... Yard Birds Shopping Center

Dick Gillingham and Bill Jones (Pictured Above), co-owners of the Two Yard Birds, have been partners in various business ventures for the past 35 years … everything from playing in an orchestra in Kentucky to Cat Fishing In Florida. But their biggest venture came in the winter of 1947 when they sold their homes and automobiles to raise the $6,000 to buy an old truck and start them in the War Surplus business.

Ten years later, in January of 1957, this small surplus store has grown to one of the largest, most modern shopping centers in this area … with an employee payroll of over 61 men and women.

In 1954 the Yard Birds built a modem Food market just south of the original building. This, of course, is POTTER’S FOOD STORE, operated by owner-manager Clarence Potter. Then, just last fall, with the erection of an addition on the original building, a new Television Department was opened, operated by Herb Bailey and Dick Nyholm.

… and last but not least, Gordon Taylor’s Major Appliances was added only a few weeks ago in the big new addition. Yes, big things, have been happening In the North End … and there are BIG THINGS YET TO COME! KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE YARD BIRDS SHOPPING CENTER.
